Top 10 Most Massive CyberAttack of All Time

The world of Internet is strewn with all kinds of major and minor hacks but the recent hack suspected by Syrian Electronic Army on New York Times, Twitter and Huffington Post made us focus on some of the most outrageous hacks of all time. Here is the infamous list.

Mafiaboy

The Y2K rumour had just been done away with but in February 2000, a minor kid from Canada who went by the alias Mafiaboy managed to feed enough garbage data to shut down Internet biggies Amazon, Yahoo! and eBay for an entire week. Mafiaboy accessed 72 computers illegally in 52 different locations and blocked 11 sites by sending up to 10,700 phony information requests in the space of 10 seconds. It was not a sophisticated attack but the hack prompted a fresh wave of computer security professionals in the industry.

Robert Morris' Worm

The first person to be convicted under the US' Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in 1990, Robert Morris is said to have created the first worm on the Internet while he was a graduate student at Cornell University in 1988. When Morris created his worm, it was apparently done to gauge the size of the Internet but the worm quickly turned rogue and replicated itself many times over, causing considerable damage to the Internet and resulting in Morris being sentenced to three years in probation, 400 hours of community service as well as a fine of $10,050.

Most Outrageous Cyber Attacks Of All Time

To hack into accounts for robbery is now considered common but when the Russian mafia hacked into Citibank accounts in 1995 and stole millions of dollars, it was considered as the first major financial robbery-intended hack. Led by Vladimir Levin, the Russian mafia managed to steal almost $3.7 million illegally before being caught in 1998. A judge sentenced him to 3 years in jail and ordered Levin to pay Citibank $2,40,015.

NASA Secrets Revealed

At the age of 16, Jonathan James, aka c0mrade, downloaded top-secret documents about the International Space Station from the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Even as the hack was discovered, NASA had to shut down its computer systems for three weeks and spent $41,000 to rectify the error. It also estimated the value of documents stolen by James at $1.7 million.

Most Outrageous Cyber Attacks Of All Time

US Military Attacked

Much before Brandley Manning and Edward Snowden, a hacker of Scottish origin named Gary McKinnon, aka Solo, hacked into military computers belonging to the US Army in 2001 and 2002 to know the secret behind UFOs. However, in doing so, McKinnon is said to have erased crucial military data that also prompted a shutdown by US Armys Military District of Washington network of 2000 computers for 24 hours.

Most Outrageous Cyber Attacks Of All Time

2012 NYTimes Hack

The current attack on NYTimes is not an isolated case. Only last year, 19-year-old hacker Adrian Limo hacked into the website and discovered a treasure trove of information that included a list of op-ed writers the group has used in the past along with their personal phone numbers and addresses. Some of the writers included veteran actor and activist Robert Redford and former secretary of state James Baker.

Sony Accounts Hacked

Anonymous offshoot Lulzsec hacked into the account of Sony Pictures and stole account information that included names, email addresses, home addresses and passwords of thousands of customers. The group apparently had taken retaliation as Sony had taken legal action against hacker George Hotz who had jailbreaked Sony's PlayStation 3 that allegedly compromised details of over a million users.

Most Outrageous Cyber Attacks Of All Time

News of The World Scandal

In one of the most brazen and unsuspected hacks, employees of British tabloid News of The World were caught tapping into the phones of celebrities like Elle McPherson and Sienna Miller, politicians and even the Royal family. Widespread public outrage resulted in the shutting down of the paper in ignominy after being in publication for 168 years.

Most Outrageous Cyber Attacks Of All Time

Anonymous Rises

Anonymous rose to fame as a group that promoted hacktivism, which was releasing documents about wrongdoing by major corporations and exposing them online to the world. A prelude to Wikileaks and much more fiercer in their hacks, Anonymous rose to become one of the top 100 most influential people in the world in 2012 according to Time magazine. From humble beginnings in 2008 where it first targeted Scientologists, the group today targets government, religious, and corporate websites in a bid to uncover their underhand dealings.

Syrian Electronic Army

Launched in May 2011, the Syrian Electronic Army is a non-affiliated member of the Syrian government that targets opposition rebel groups and prominent Western social media and news organizations from time to time. It is said to be the first public, virtual army of the Arab world and the group proves its effectiveness every few months, their latest hack being that into Twitter, Huffington Post and New York Times.
